News is a challenging search domain because it is highly dynamic in terms of vocabularies introduced and content evolution. News is a crucial subject domain on which a large segment of our society relies on, and some of the critical ones are: personal awareness, organizational knowledge and advancement, journalistic research, and understanding long-term trends and changes by historical and other social science scholars.
Accessing and searching news can be made easier by developing a user-friendly tool which takes advantage of our most powerful sense, namely our visual perception. The Laboratory of Applied Informatics Research (LAIR) at the University of Toronto has developed a prototypical text searching tool called ETTA which allows the user to browse and search complex textual content using a visual approach.
